The Butterfly
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:The old has gone, the new is here!"—2 Corinthians 5:17
Of course my mind goes into knitting mode when I find out my daughter has thyroid cancer. I think, “What can I make to bring awareness to it?” The first thing that comes to mind is the breast cancer awareness washcloth that I have made. I made that using the colors pink, purple and teal that represent thyroid cancer awareness. They also use a butterfly as a symbol using those same colors.
Why a butterfly? Apparently, the thyroid has a butterfly shape. The butterfly is also a symbol used in the church during Easter to signify Christ’s resurrection. The butterfly breaking through the cocoon represents Christ being risen from the tomb. I see our lives the same way. The caterpillar is our old self, we find Christ and we are changed from the inside out just as the butterfly. Our old life is gone and our new life takes flight.
When I started this blog, I had no intention of writing about thyroid cancer. Honestly, I had no intention of last week’s blog being posted on my personal Facebook page, but God did. From that post, I have had numerous people reach out to me that are praying for Danielle and sharing their own experience with the same thing. God is good. He knows better than me. I continue to trust that God loves my daughter more than I can even imagine.
While everyone knows that October is breast cancer awareness month, I would like to bring it to light that September is Thyroid Cancer awareness month. Why is papillary thyroid cancer becoming such a growing epidemic? Why do so many people have thyroid disease? While I would love to see a cure for this, I think the bigger question is what is the cause of this? Click here on how to take the thyroid neck check.
I plan on passing out the washcloths that I am making with a tag attached to them while I am at the hospital for my daughter’s surgery that is scheduled next week. I don't know who will get them, but God does. He will lead me to the right people to receive them. If one person gets diagnosed with thyroid cancer from reading about my daughter's journey, it makes it worth sharing. The sooner it is discovered the better.
This week I am humbled and thankful for all of the people that are praying for our family. I am thankful for the amazing surgeon that was put in Danielle's pathway. But most of all I am thankful that God can use a flawed person like me to share how Jesus is working in my life.
