Leaving the Nest
“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”—Ephesians 3:20 (NLT)
I recently read a book called, “Doing Life With Your Adult Children; Keep Your Mouth Shut and the Welcome Mat out.” I would highly recommend this to anyone to read that has a child in their late teens or older. I wish I would have read this when my children were in high school. Cutting the strings and letting them make their own decisions is what we need to do, but when they are still on your dime, that is where it gets tricky. Of course, if they are still living under your roof that is one thing, but when it is time for them to go off to college or move out on their own, you have two choices; release them to their Heavenly Father or make yourself sick with fear, worry and attempts to control what is out of your control. No matter what the age of your child, you want to be able to fix things to make them better. However, when you do this, how can they ever leave the nest and independently stand on their own two feet?
Last May my daughter graduated from college and moved back home to save some money. It was hard for me to not fall back into the “doing everything for her” mode. I had to remind myself that she was able to take care of herself for four years as an undergraduate, so she can take care of herself now too. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue on to graduate school in her degree, so she moved home to save money and work in her field. Despite the uncertainty of getting into a program, she applied to several for this next school year. This spring when she was accepted into a college, she knew that this was God’s will for her.
Due to my daughter’s health issues as an undergraduate, she didn’t have the most stellar GPA, so I couldn’t help but wonder if graduate school was going to happen for her. I know her story and I know how smart and capable she is, but most colleges don’t go beyond what they see on paper. After one of her college visits in November, I had journaled about it. I wrote, Lord, I think this college would be a good fit for Danielle, but whether or not it is, I have peace and feel as if You are telling me, that she will get in some where….trust Me! When I journaled this, it was before her visit to where she will be going.
After my prayer time, God sent a cardinal in our backyard. I had literally been praying for God to give me serenity and comfort for what fears I was allowing to reside in my heart. God continued to tell me, “I got this. She is going to go where she belongs.” So, I have no doubt Harding University is exactly where God wants her. It has all fallen in place. God is true to His Word in Ephesians 3:20. He is accomplishing infinitely more than I could have ever asked or imagined in my daughter’s life.
Are you struggling with letting go of control with something in your life? One of your children, an elderly parent, job…? Do you let fear and worry of “what-if” consume you? Trust me, this has not been easy for me when it comes to my children, but they can’t spread their wings if we clip them. God wants what is best for our children more than we do. Releasing your fears and worries into your loving Father’s hands will change your life.
Dear Lord,
Thank You that Your plan always prevails. Even though life changes,Your Word never does. Forgive me when my faith waivers. I thank You that as much as I love my children, You love them more than I could ever imagine and want the best for them too. Help me to release all of my fears and worries at the foot of the cross. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”—Matthew 6:34
