Social Distancing
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”—Psalm 46:1 (NLT)
According to Mirriam-Webster one of the definitions for social distancing is, the avoidance of close contact with other people during the outbreak of a contagious disease in order to minimize exposure and reduce the transmission of infection.
This is now a new word added to everyone’s vocabulary, except we now know that the actual distance between people should be 6 feet. Did you ever imagine stores/businesses having tape on the floors measuring 6 feet apart for you while waiting in line or plexiglass between you and a store clerk? What has social distancing look like this week for you? I will share how it has looked like for me.
Because we are limited to the people that we are interacting with now, I have resurrected a neighborhood FB page. It went from 10 members to 22 in a few days. It is a good tool to communicate needs with the current restrictions. Using it, one of the ladies on our street was able to organize a 9 am weekday Pledge of Allegiance where we gather 6 feet apart at a home at the front of a home that proudly displays the American flag. The first time I went, I got teary eyed watching the families all say it together.
Having a cocktail hour spacing our chairs the required distance was another way for us to stay connected. While the current stay-at-home order has limited what we can do together, I think we are all looking forward to a real block party with the children having a talent show for us. Families that are never home due to their children being in sports, are now playing outside and taking walks together. It is refreshing for me to see this.
I have learned how to use Zoom and am thankful for the generous heart of my prayer yoga instructor. God is using her not just in her corner of the world but now all over. We had people join us from Arizona, Colorado as well as other states. I have another yoga instructor that is doing 2-3 yoga classes a week on Facebook Live. These are both women who are doing this because of their love for others. Thanks to these avenues as well as Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube, I am still able to do exercise classes that have been a part of my weekly work-out routine.
My church knitting group was able to reconnect this week via FaceTime. We were even able to include an out-of-town friend who visits our group when she is in the area. We knit, talked and were able to share life together, thanks to this technology. Praise Jesus!
Staying home and social distancing may be inconvenient but they are temporary. It is a matter of us all doing our part to help get this pandemic under control. We may have to get a little creative to stay connected but what a blessing we have so many options at our fingertips.
Where you can you share Jesus this week with others? It can be as simple as sharing your church sermons on your Facebook page. Cross Timbers Church has been connecting with our members with not just their weekly sermons but also live videos during the day. I am sure to post these when I see them.
If you don’t have a neighborhood Facebook page or email list, can you start one? I have collected all but one name for every house on my street so that I can be more intentional on my prayer walks. Get creative and let God use you during these uncertain times. Please share with me what you have been doing.😊
Dear Lord,
I ask for creative ways to shine Your light in my corner of the world. Reveal to me opportunities where I can give hope to those that need it. Help me to live one day at a time and trust You in the midst of it all. I give thanks and praise You that I have the technology at my fingertips to stay connected to my friends and family despite COVID-19. Thank You that You are my refuge. It is in the name of Jesus I pray these things. Amen.
April Memory Verse
For the past few months I have been memorizing Psalm 29:11. The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace. It has been a good reminder for me that through the power of God that I will get through each day and be filled with His peace when I call on Him.
For April and maybe even May, I plan on imprinting Psalm 46:1 on my heart, will you join me?
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
