Being Still Isn't A Bad Thing
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”—Psalm 46:10 (NLT)
We live a society where we are always on the go, so we don’t really enjoy what we have. Because of the COVID 19, we are now being forced to be still. I don’t know about you, but this sure has put things in perspective for me. It can open your eyes to what is really important in life.
Being around my loved ones is one of them. While I know my daughter made the right decision going back to Arkansas last month, I am sad that she isn't able to fly home for Easter as we had planned. However, I am thankful for FaceTime as a way to communicate with her. Thanks to technology, despite the miles, we have the ability to stay connected.
This is a time to not let my faith waiver, but trust God and dig deeper into His Word. Again, I love how God gave me the word, deeper, for 2020 because He knew how much I would need it with all of the uncertainty surrounding me. This alone time has been an opportunity for me to draw closer to Him.
What has worked for me is spending 30 minutes to an hour of my day with my Bible reading/devotions. In February, I started something called, The Bible Recap. It is a one year daily chronological Bible reading. It takes about 15-20 minutes per day to do. Yesterday, I completed day 58. If you are looking for a Bible reading plan, I would encourage you to try the one I am doing. You can start it at any time. It has been such a blessing to me.
At the end of my year, I will have ready every book in the Bible. What I love about it is, that with the YouVersion Bible app, you can put it as a daily plan so it is easy to keep up with exactly where you are on it. When you are done with your daily reading (I turn on the audio and read along with it), you listen to the podcast that goes along with it (it is 5-10 minutes long).
I have been amazed with how some of the scriptures have corresponded with what is going on in our world right now. In Exodus 16:20 it talked about how the people gathered more bread than was needed and it went bad. It angered God that they took more than He had told them. I know I can’t be the only one who is in disbelief at all of the empty shelves, freezer and refrigerator sections in the grocery stores? We aren’t going to run out of food, so why are people in such a panic or hoarding supplies?
With my Leviticus reading this past week it talked about those being quarantined when they had diseases. I am amazed how God has used some of these Old Testament scriptures come to life in our current times. Just as God’s presence was with Moses and the Israelites, His presence is also with me all of the time too…no one can take that from any of us.
Despite social distancing and stay-at-home orders, have you found yourself drawing closer to God and your loved ones during this time? If not, what are some things you can try implementing this week? If you aren’t interested in reading the Bible in a year, why not consider trying a short Bible study? Cross Timbers Church is offering one for this Easter week.
Even though I may not be able to physically attend a church this Easter Sunday, Cross Timbers Bible reading plan this week, will put me in the midst of the Easter Story, envisioning Jesus’ last days on earth and the price He paid for all of us to be free from bondage and sin for He bore them all for us on the Cross. Since we have so many online options, I pray that more people find Jesus than if they had walked through the doors of a church on Easter.
We matter because God loves us more than we could ever imagine. We don’t need to have a big church service or family get together to be able to celebrate. God gave His one and only Son, Jesus for EVERYONE and that is a reason to rejoice!
Dear Lord,
Open my eyes during this Holy Week in ways I can see You and love You on a deeper level. I praise You that in my stillness, that You are able to reveal Yourself to me through scripture. I thank You that You have shown Your abounding love for each and every one of us by sending Your one and only Son to be the sacrifice for our sins and because of that we are forgiven (1 John 4:9-10). Let Your love flow through me to those who need to hear about Your Easter gift to them. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen
