Be a Listening Ear

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,”—Proverbs 1:5 (ESV)

We live in a society when the answer to a question is just one click away. Unfortunately, sometimes our response to someone when they are going through a difficult time is to offer them our “advice” when all they really want is for us to listen.

Are you the type of person that a perfect stranger will tell you their life story? If so, then you have the gift of listening. I can’t tell you how many times, I walk away from someone I don’t know and I think, “I can’t believe they shared that with me.” However, they obviously needed someone to just listen to them and not tell them what to do.

“I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!”—Psalm 116:1-2 (NLT) What a sweet image this is. Not only does God hear our prayers, as long as we have a breath in our body, but He also bends down to listen to them. This is how we can be more like Jesus. We can be a listening ear to someone else.

One of the best ways to not only put a smile on God’s face, but others too is to reach out to a person that is broken and hurting and help them in some way. Has God laid someone on your heart that you feel like needs prayers? Could it be someone that has been homebound since March? Contact that person and let them know you are thinking about them and ask if there is anything you can do for them.

During this time in which we are living, it is hard to not isolate yourself, especially for those that live alone. Many are unable or afraid to leave their homes. What can you do to help someone that might be battling loneliness? Maybe it is you that is struggling. What are some ways you cope with it that you could share with someone else?

I am thankful for a Loving God who is with me 24 hours a day. He bends down and hears all of my prayers. He can use each and every one of us to be a blessing to someone. Our goal should be to listen to His voice as He listens to ours. We have the opportunity to be a blessing to someone just by listening to their cares and concerns just as Jesus does for us.

Many times, God will speak to me through a song. As I was writing this devotion, I heard the song, Loveby We are Messengers. As I listened to the lyrics, I felt God impress on my heart to add it to this devotion because someone needed to hear it. It is a song that will put a pep in your step and remind you that you are loved and not alone.

Dear Lord,

Open my eyes to the needs of those around me. Guide me on where I can serve You best. Give me wisdom on how to bless the broken and hurting put in my pathway this week. I praise You for being my friend that I can talk to any time of the day. I lift of those that struggling with being alone. Lead them to scripture and friendships that will give them hope. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things.

August Memory Verse

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.— Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) We are living in a time when things don’t make sense. Now more than ever I need to be trusting God and seeking Him for direction in all I do.
