Being Salt

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”—Matthew 5:13

Salt is used as both a preservative and as a seasoning. When God’s Word tells me to be the salt of the earth it has two meanings to me. First, as a Christian I should be doing all I can to preserve God’s Word. Part of that responsibility was to do that with my children so that they will do the same for future generations. I am also seasoning by both writing and speaking about Jesus on what I am learning from the Bible.

We preserve our faith by sharing it with the world. I do this by studying His Word, praying, and representing Jesus where I go and what I do. You may think, how can God use me when I am working 10 hours a day? It could be you are working from home or now having to be both parent and teacher. Whatever your situation, God can use you right where you are.

Where we see limitations, God sees opportunity. We do what we can to embrace what is good in our world. We love and treat others as Jesus would. Kingdom work is needed in our jobs, schools, homes, activities and neighborhoods. We represent Christ in our workplace, home and community. We all have a role to play in our sphere of influence. The only way to help grow God’s kingdom is to tell others about Jesus and what He has done in our lives.

I am to be seasoning with the love of Jesus wherever I go. Can others tell that Christ lives in me because of my actions, attitudes and reactions? Does what I say and the way I live align with what Jesus’ teachings? What are some ways you have been able to share God’s goodness with those around you?

Father God,

Forgive me when my attitudes and actions aren’t representative of Christ-like character. Let the flavor of Christ flow through me. I ask for boldness to share what Jesus has done for me with others that may not know You.  I ask for hearts to be shaken awake by the Word of God. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen.

October Memory Verse:

Will you join me and not only imprinting Mark 16:15 on your heart but also living it out in your community?

“Go into the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”—Mark 16:15 (NLT)
