Owner's Manual

“I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”—Psalm 40:8 (NLT)

One day, my automatic rear latch on my car wouldn’t work. Rather than get out the owner’s manual or search online about it, I automatically made an appointment at the car dealership to not only bring my car in but arrange to have a loaner car because I was convinced something electrical was going on with it.

Two days later, I noticed this message across the dash, automatic rear lift gate turned off. What? There is a switch for that?  I had owned the car for over a year and didn’t even know there was a control to turn it on/off. Needless to say, I was glad I saw that warning on my dashboard. I would have been quite embarrassed to have them open my door and notice the switch was in the “off” position.

This reminds me of one of my memory verses, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”—Matthew 6:34 When I try to control my tomorrow, I am not trusting the Lord with all of my heart. Rather than go to my Bible and seek His truth (the owner’s manual), I let stress get the best of me. I automatically assumed there was something wrong with my car rather than consulting the guide that would have solved the problem.

I do that with life in general. I get tomorrow oriented. That is the root of much of my worry. It is hard for me to enjoy the present when I am thinking about the future. While I wish I wasn’t like that, I know God created me this way so that I will depend on Him and His Word to be my Guide. When I relinquish what I have no control over, my life is much more peaceful.

Relying on the Bible as my instruction manual on how to live, is a much more enjoyable life for me. Psalm 40:8 is my reminder when God’s Word is written on my heart, I take joy in doing His will; Love God. Love others. It is that simple. As I take the focus off me and think about how I can be a blessing to other people, I don’t think about the “what-ifs” tomorrow may bring. I pick up my knitting and pray God use my hands to share the love of Jesus with someone that needs it.

With the upcoming holidays, you will have more opportunities to bless people in your community. We are living in a time where more and more people need the light of Jesus. Where can you be a beacon of hope in your corner of the world?

Father God,

I don’t know what tomorrow holds for me, but I thank You that no matter what happens, one thing is certain, You are with me! Forgive me when I don’t live for today and worry about tomorrow. I ask for You to open the door for new opportunities where I can serve You during the upcoming holiday season. I trust You to use me to share the Good News of Jesus and His love in my little corner of the world. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen.

November Memory Verse:

Will you join me to continue to imprint Mark 16:15 on your heart and live it out in your community this month ?

“Go into the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”—Mark 16:15 (NLT)
