Silver Linings

“However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you.”—John 14:26 (GW)

Even though it has been a challenging 6 weeks, God has brought me so many blessings. Due to not spending as much time in prayer or knitting as much as I would like, I had felt like I was in a bit in a slump.

However, rather than focus on what I haven’t been able to do, I have chosen to find the silver lining during these difficult days. I have even had several opportunities to give away some knit gifts. There is one in particular that I would like to share with you.

The moment that stood out to me the most was when I listened to the Spirit prompting me to give a knit gift to the young woman admitting my mother into the hospital last Wednesday.

My mother does not like to wait. Due to some cognitive issues, she has a hard time understanding this is usually the case when you go to an ER. She was not in a very good mood and wasn’t being the kindest person to this innocent woman. After she finished all the paperwork, I reached into my bag and pulled out some hair scrunchies that I had made. I told her, “I knit gifts to give to people who make a difference in my day to let them know God loves them and they matter. I would like you to have one of these hair scrunchies.”

She shared with me how she had been married for 17 years and her husband died in December. Her soon to be 16-year-old daughter was going to be celebrating her first birthday without him and was having a hard time. Her daughter’s favorite color is blue, so she asked if she could take the blue one to give to her to let her know God is with her.

Not only that, she told me that she wasn’t scheduled to work that day, but for some reason picked up the shift. She knew it was for her to meet me so that God could speak through me to her. You have no idea how this warmed my heart to know she was a believer thanking me for being obedient.

I also let her know how I had been a young widowed single mom. I told her to please reach out to me at any time if she needed a listening ear. What a gracious loving God we serve to lift me up when I needed it the most. He was able to use both of us to encourage each other. This was my silver lining for the 6 hour wait in the emergency room.

Are you going through a trying time right now? What can you do to find the silver lining in what seems hopeless? I can tell you, it hasn’t been easy, but John 14:26 tells me, that I have a Helper, the Holy Spirit. He is my Advocate. Through Him, I am able to find the blessings despite the chaos that might be swirling around me.

 Father God,

Forgive me when I listen to the lies of the enemy that I am not doing enough. Train my heart to find the silver linings when life throws a curve ball. Thank you for putting people in my pathway to lift me up as well as using me to share Your love with the broken hearted. I lift those up to You whose circumstances make them feel weak. Give them the strength to get through the day. Sprinkle nuggets of hope to refresh their weary souls. I pray these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

April Verse

With Easter being this week, let us remember 1 Peter 2:24. Jesus died on the cross for every one of us so that we would die to our sins and live a God honoring life. Praise God by His wounds that we are healed!

“He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.”—1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)
