Journaling
“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”—Isaiah 43:19 (NLT)
Journaling is one way I remind myself of God’s faithfulness. I can look back on what I wrote about God’s unfailing love for me during the dark times. It is something you can do for only your eyes to read. It’s a way to pour out your heart to God. It doesn’t have to be grammatically correct. As you write or type, it releases your thoughts to your Heavenly Father.
Looking back at it gives me a greater understanding of His purpose for me. I can see more clearly how He has used my life experiences to weave them into something beautiful for His glory. This was how I was able to write a book about my grief and faith journey after my first husband’s death. I used it to compile my experience to help other young widows.
When in difficult seasons, we need to remind ourselves that God has a plan and a purpose. Even our darkest days can be used to glorify Him. In the wilderness we often learn valuable lessons. In these seasons, we can trust God is still there. Isaiah 43:19 tells us that God makes a way for us in the wilderness.
Due to my mom’s Alzeheimer’s, I am also chronicling this journey. The monthly dementia support group recommended to do this. Apparently, there are different seasons for someone with dementia. Documenting them is helpful. Who knows? Maybe one day, I might be able to write about this experience to share with others in similar circumstances.
Think about what a gift it is for us that someone documented the Bible for us. We have the same ability to do that for ourselves. How do you keep track of what God has and is doing in your life? If you haven’t ever done so, I encourage you to keep some kind of diary. I keep a small notebook near me during my morning mediation time so that I can write whatever God impresses on my heart.
Father God,
Thank You for Your love and faithfulness to me. Forgive me when I take this gift for granted. Only You can make a pathway for us during the wilderness. I give You thanks for those that penned The Bible. I lift those up to You who are in a difficult season. Give them glimmers of hope during this time of their life. Use me this week to be a light in someone’s dark day. I pray these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
