Living in Unity

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”—Ephesians 4:3

The day after former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination, Ephesians 4:3 was in my morning devotion. It was a reminder of my verse I chose to focus on for 2024; Psalm 133:1; “It is truly wonderful when the people of God live together in peace.”—Psalm 133:1 (CEV)

Both verses point to brotherly love we find with each other through Christ. We are a family of brothers and sisters in Christ who declare the Gospel through our lives in how we love each other. Our unity is a witness to the watching world. Our relationships with other believers should be marked with joy and kindness.

As believers, we are one family. Our political differences should not separate us because the one thing we DO have in common is, Jesus. He is what unites us. We all belong to Him. As Christians, we are called to live in unity, especially with other believers.

I don’t know about you, but I definitely have concerns on where our country/world is headed. However, rather than be anxious about it, I am choosing to be prayerful. By keeping our eyes on our sovereign God who continually sustains us, we can rest knowing He is always working behind the scenes.

This November in the United States, if we aren’t happy with the leadership in our country, we have the freedom of choice to elect new leaders. We are in desperate need of a worldwide revival. It isn’t a political problem. It is a spiritual one. We pray for God to raise up leaders of integrity. We are in a battle of good vs evil. Prayer against this is our best weapon.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.”—1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NLT) We are called to pray for ALL people….even our leaders whose policies don’t align with scripture. No one is beyond God’s reach.

As believers in Christ, this is a time for us to pray together in solidarity. As Christians we are one family. Our political differences should not separate us. The love of Jesus keeps us connected. This election season, let us not let political candidates cause division among us.

Father God,

Help me to pray for our leaders whose policies don’t align with Your Word. I pray for peace and solidarity in our land. I desire to be like Paul in 1 Timothy 2…to pray faithfully as Paul asked the disciples of Christ to do. I pray for unity and nonviolence in the political realm. I pray for the soul of our nation and world. May we not let our political differences cause divisions within the church. I ask for wisdom in speaking Your truth in love and gentleness with those who may not agree with what Your Word says. I pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

July Verse
“My soul rests quietly only when it looks to God; from him comes my deliverance.”—Psalm 62:1 (ISV)
