“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”(NLT) —2 Timothy 3:16
I’m not sure if anyone else is struggling with memorizing scripture like I am. I have been able to do each month’s verse but when I go back to the prior months, some don’t come as quickly as I would like. I want these scriptures engraved in my heart so that I can recall them when needed. These scriptures should come to my mind just as easily as I can knit the garter stitch. I can knit that stitch with my eyes closed. I should be able to repeat a Bible scripture the same way.
Let’s face it, we are a generation that keeps ourselves so busy that scripture memorization is an area where satan knows he can try and fill our schedules with so much that we don’t make it a priority. He knows that it is God’s will for us to know His Word, so he will do whatever he can to side track us from learning it.
Scripture Typer is probably a great app for many people, but it isn’t really working for me. When I memorize scripture I personalize it when I repeat it back to myself. I say, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in my life; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. There is no law against these things.” When I type in the “my life” instead of “our lives,” it throws if all off and shows I haven’t memorized this scripture.
Just as I went back to printing out my prayer list instead of depending on my notes on my IPad, I am also going back to writing out my scriptures on paper for recall. Growing up, this is how I learned when I would study for school. It is how I learn and retain the best. God knows that too.
I know that if I am getting discouraged in this area, that there are others that are as well. This is no different for me than when I have to refresh my memory to recall a stitch that I haven’t done in some time. While I can quickly Google a tutorial for it, that’s not the case when I want to share a scripture to give someone an encouraging word. Or if I need one comfort, I want to be able to repeat that in my head automatically. Last month’s memory verse, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”—Psalm 119:11 convicted me that His Word is not hidden in my heart like it needs to be.
Dear Lord,
In the name of Jesus, help me to carve out time this week to memorize Your Word. I thank You for Your grace and mercy in this area of my life. I praise You that as I spend more time with You that it enables me to understand Your Word and Your ways in my life. I ask that you guide my hands and heart with what I am making this week and that You lead me to the person that needs some extra kindness in their day. Amen!
If you are memorizing Galatians 5:22-23 with me, I have written it out on a sticky not to attach to my patterns that I am working on. Please make sure you tweet @KnitPrayShare or share your projects on the Knit Pray Share Facebook page or Instagram using the hashtags #ThreadsWithRed #KnitPrayShare.
In Texas, we are getting warm weather, so knitting scarves to give away aren’t very useful. Now I am making these easy garter stitch coffee cup cozy to give as gifts.
