“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”—2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)
Last week’s post about Head and Heart Knowledge, had me thinking about how Scripture shapes us. Apart from God’s Word, I am unable to live a Christian life. He equips me with it so that I can finish every good work He has started within me. It helps to take my eyes off me and fix them on Jesus. Scripture is the foundation of our faith, but it needs to be more than head knowledge. It we don’t experience it, how can we understand it?
I have found myself spending more time in God’s Word to calm my mind during these uncertain times. My word for 2020 was deeper. By digging deeper into God’s Word, I learned to trust Him more. His promises are what kept and still keep me on solid footing. Hard times will come. When they do, we can draw from what we know and have learned through our Bible reading. We will find He is faithful and true to His Word.
We can’t rely on a weekly sermon to be the only time we read or listen to God’s Word. It needs to be a daily practice. Even if you only read one verse a day to connect with God, that is better than none. The YouVersion app is a great place to start. It has a daily Bible verse and if you have an extra minute, there is a short video with someone talking about it.
Reading and being in God’s Word shapes my heart. It should be what grounds me in my life. “Everything God says is true--and it's a shield for all who come to him for safety.”—Proverbs 30:5 (CEV) When I carve time out of my day to pursue God in a more intimate way, I am filled with peace and joy.
Each day as we mature as Christians, God continues to mold us into the image of Christ. He sees the potential in us and until we take our last breath, God will continue to shape us. How can you apply God’s Word to a situation you are facing this week?
Dear Lord,
Thank You that through Your Word, You are equipping me for every good work that You have planned for me. Forgive me when I doubt what You reveal to me. I trust You are with me every step I take. Help me to hold fast to Your Word in all I do this week. Use me to point the lost to Your Son, who is the Way, the Truth and Life for every one of us. I praise You for leading me to scripture to deepen my faith. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen.
August Memory Verse:
Memorizing Hebrews 10:24 is a reminder for me to be thinking of ways I can encourage others in my small groups.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,”—Hebrews 10:24
