Word for the Year

January 3, 2022 Lisa Hennessy

“I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.”—Psalm 119:15 (NLT)

At the end of each year, I pray for God to give me a word for the following year. For 2021 my word was, Believe. I had started a baby hat ministry and was believing that God would provide the manpower to supply hats to a local pregnancy crisis center. I was choosing to believe God’s truth in Luke 1:37, nothing is impossible with God.

Our group was able to provide over 1700 hats to two pregnancy centers and some local hospitals! Wow! God definitely provided the hands to make this happen. What started with 3 of us has grown to 10….some weeks more. I give God all the glory. He not only opened the door for us to gather weekly at a coffee shop, but also led other women with servant hearts to be a part of this ministry with me.

For 2022, I didn’t have an impression on what word God wanted me to focus on. I did a few online quizzes to see if any of their words would speak to me. None of them did. With all of my writing about how important it is to read the Bible, I am embarrassed to admit this, but here it goes….I hadn’t taken out my Bible and asked God to speak to me through scripture for my word for the year.

I took out my Bible and randomly flipped open to the New Testament. It landed on Philippians 2. In the latter part of verse 15, I read, among whom you shine as lights in the world. I then flipped to the Psalms and it opened to the beginning of Psalm 119 with this header, Your Word is a Lamp to My Feet.

Even though I was clearly given a word, I still questioned Him. Lord, should my word for 2022, be light? Right after that thought, I walk by my kitchen island where I had put a note for my husband reading,  laundry room light. My husband did that before he had left for work. Usually, he will toss the note after he does it. God gave me the word, light twice in scripture, but I still doubted what He was telling me. It took my note to my husband to confirm, Yes, Lisa, Light is your word for 2022.

For 2022, I am going to trust that God’s Word is going to be what illuminates where He is leading me. It is no coincidence that I chose Psalm 119:105 as my memory verse in December and felt as if I needed to keep it for January too. I know that for 2022 I need to boldly step where God is leading me and the only way to do that is rely on His Word as my lamp to guide me so that I can be a light in the world.

Where does God want your focus for 2022? Do you have a Word He has given you? If not, pray for Him to reveal one to you. Or, maybe you will have better luck than me with one of these: ChristianPlanner.com   or Dayspring.

Father God,
Forgive me when I doubt Your provisions. I give You praise for all of the people You have put in my life to help fulfill Your plans this past year. I thank You for Your Word that illuminates where You are calling me. Help me live out Psalm 119:15 to study Your commandments and reflect on Your ways. When I do, I know You can use me to be a light in the dark places of someone’s life. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray these things. Amen
