Counting My Blessings

November 17, 2025 Lisa Hennessy

“He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes.”—Deuteronomy 10:21 (NLT)

While I know the context of Deuteronomy 10:21, is Moses addressing the Israelites before entering the promised land, it also encourages believers today to recognize God’s presence in our lives as well as calling us to cultivate a heart and spirit of gratitude.

This past week it seems as if every time I am in my car or when I have turned on my morning inspiration playlist, I would hear the song, Counting My Blessings ,by Seth Schulueter. I found myself singing, God, I’m still counting my blessings for all You have done in my life…I’ll keep counting my blessings knowing I can’t count so high.

I had been praying for guidance and words to write for my blogs the rest of this month.  After the third time I heard it, I thought, is God telling me to write about this? Sometimes, even though I think God is giving me inspiration, I doubt it. He had to play that song 2 more times, before I realized, Yes! I do believe this is my topic for this week.

As I count my blessings, I can’t help but think of the mighty miracles of God that I have seen with my own eyes. Two of them being the birth of my two children. Both pregnancies were planned, however, when my son was 19 months old, I thought, “I don’t think I am ready to have a second child. I think we should wait another year.”

Of course, God knew better. I was already pregnant. Had you told me before conception what my future would hold, I wouldn’t have signed up for it. However, what a gift to have been pregnant when my first husband, John, died.

That little life inside of me is what kept me eating, sleeping, and going on with life. Danielle was such a loving little baby. Her sweet little smile melted your heart. I see that same precious smile in her baby, Callahan, who I will get to see and hold in a few weeks.

While I enjoy hosting Thanksgiving at our home, this year I am counting it as a blessing we will be spending it with my daughter and her husband cooking for us in their home.

As I type this post in my comfy chair in a home I love, I am thankful for a loving and supportive husband who provides for me to pursue my love of writing and knitting ministry.

At least once a year, I must also give God praise and thanksgiving for the ladies He has blessed me with every Wednesday morning. It is hard to believe we have been gathering in His name and knitting/crocheting for nearly 6 years together.

Thankfulness opens the windows of heaven by giving us glimpses of the joy we will one day have in eternity. Maintaining a thankful mindset doesn’t mean we deny reality, but it helps us to find some joy in our world around us.

I don’t have enough space to write about all the ways God has and is blessing me. However, I can tell you writing about it sure does remind me of God’s loving hand and presence in my life. As the songs says, I’ll keep counting my blessings knowing I can’t count so high.

Father God,

Thank You for scriptures and songs that remind me of Your steadfast love. I give You thanks for the gift of family and friends. Forgive me when I don’t appreciate all the ways You provide for me throughout my day. You are with me in every single detail of my life. You alone our worthy of my praise. I lift those up to You who are having a difficult time counting their blessings. Open their eyes today to see how You have provided for them. I pray these things in the name of Your precious Son, Jesus. Amen.

November Verse

“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised.”—Psalm 113:3
