“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”—Matthew 7:7
I had been battling laryngitis and sore tonsils for 3 weeks. I told my husband if I still didn’t have my voice back when I got home from visiting my daughter, that I would make an appointment with an ENT. When I woke up Tuesday morning, I felt fluid in my ears. Not good…I was getting on an airplane in 2 days.
I hadn’t been to the Ear Nose and Throat doctor since my sinus surgery in 2014. I knew due to the amount of time since I had seen the doctor, I would be considered a new patient. It was a long shot to get in that day. Matthew 7:7 was my morning scripture. “Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you.”(CEV)
I know God is not a genie in a bottle and whatever I ask I will receive. However, I do know He can’t answer a miraculous prayer if I don’t ask Him. I called the doctor office about 15 minutes after they opened. Praise God, I was still in their system as well as them taking our new health insurance. I told the woman; If I can see someone today, I don’t care what doctor I see in the practice. I know it won’t shock you that they had just had 2 cancellations and one of them was with the doctor that did my surgery.
Praise Jesus! The doctor gave me a few prescriptions and the following morning, I could already feel the fluid was better as well as my tonsils not as swollen. Because I was trying to get all my ducks in a row before I left for my trip. I also had the dilemma about cancelling a doctor appointment I had been waiting over a year to get.
Once my daughter had her due date, I started calling for cancellations for an earlier date 2-3 times a month starting in January. As it got closer, I was making those calls twice a week. I was also praying, Lord, I know if it is Your will for me to see this particular doctor, You will have a cancellation for me.
Well, I cancelled that appointment. When I tried to reschedule with that doctor she was booked out for new patients for over a year (another situation where it had been several years since I had seen her, so had to start over as a new patient). Out of desperation, I asked, when is the next available appointment with any of the doctors at any of your locations? I was told March 2026.
At this point, I am ready to change to another hospital system, but in his wisdom, my husband said, why don’t you tell your internal medicine doctor what is going on and see if he can get you a referral to be seen sooner? I was able to message him through the patient portal. He wanted me to see him before he did the referral.
I get it and was willing to do that but apparently my internal medicine doctor was able to get me a telehealth visit with the specialist before he would be able to see me. Again, this was due to another cancellation.
God knows each of us and how we are wired. He created us. He knew I had matters on my mind and what would give me the needed peace for me to enjoy my time with my daughter and new grandson. I am no longer worried about who or when I can see a doctor for some nagging symptoms that may be nothing, but at least now I have some peace of mind while on my trip.
Again, just because I ask, seek and knock doesn’t mean God will answer or open every door for me. He obviously didn’t. In my flesh, I thought God would open up an appointment with the original doctor. He didn’t. God closed the door with that doctor and redirected me to someone else. He gave me something better. I actually prefer the telehealth visit.
It isn’t always easy to remember God has a plan and it usually isn’t what we expect. We stay faithful in prayer and continue to trust He knows and wants what is best for us.
Father God,
Forgive me when I doubt Your faithfulness. Thank You for unexpected gifts in unexpected ways. You answer our prayers in Your perfect timing. It isn’t always our desired outcome because You know what is best for us. I lift those up to You who are discouraged about unanswered prayers, May they see Your hand in the door You may be closing and open their eyes to a door You may be opening for them. I pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
