Drawing Near

January 19, 2026 Lisa Hennessy

“All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.”—John 6:37

Carving out a pocket of time to be still in God’s presence shouldn’t be something that takes great effort on our part. This post is a bit of a continuation from last week because distractions are what impede us from staying in a routine.

From the time our feet hit the floor, the demands of our day start to pull us in different directions. The enemy is going to try whatever he can to distract you from any type of consistent prayer time.

A daily prayer routine doesn’t require something that is long and elaborate. It requires focus, quietness and stillness for a few minutes each day. Inviting Jesus into the start of our day will help ground us. I start with praising Him by repeating Psalm 118:24 before my feet hit the floor or as I am walking into my bathroom.

I have my favorite chair (which REALLY needs to go to the upholsterer to get restuffed…superlopsided from how I sit on it), with a storage footstool. It holds my Bibles and devotion books. It is where I connect with God each morning.

On the mornings I go to a 6 am workout class, I start my day reading 1 or 2 devotions. When I get home, I make my matcha green tea and then start my Bible reading plan. On other mornings, I do both my devotions and Bible readings before I go to the gym or my knitting group.

By consistently choosing this quiet place each morning, is how I created this simple routine which shapes my morning and sets the tone of my day. This structure is what helps still my mind that is so prone to jump from place to place. Even if I oversleep, I am still able to incorporate some version of this daily habit.

Cultivating a daily practice of quiet time with God takes commitment on our part. With consistent and intentional alone time with God, our relationship will slowly grow and deepen.

It’s not about trying to achieve the perfect routine. It is about us learning to spend time with God at the start of our day (whenever that may be for you) allowing Him to direct our steps. God meets us in those quiet moments. It is a time for Him to renew us.

God wants us to start our day in His Word not out of guilt or pressure but from a true yearning to be filled with His hope and love. It is a gift He will give us if we make the time for it.

Invite God into your day by reading a morning devotion, verse for the day or just sitting in silence thanking Him for another day. It really grounds me when I do this. I can tell you from my experience, when I don’t do at least one of those things, my day starts frazzled.

Jesus tells us in John 6:37; “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” Did you read that? ALL who come to Him, He will NEVER drive away. When we draw near to God, He draws near to us.

Father God,

I want to hear Your voice. Help me to still my mind to encounter You each morning. Renew my spirit and open my heart during my quiet time. Reveal Yourself to me. Thank You for Your encouraging Words of Your unending love for all of Your children. I lift those up to You who are having difficulty finding the time and space to be quiet in Your presence. Carve out a small pocket in their day to spend uninterrupted time with You. I pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

January Verse
“I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me.”—Proverbs 8:17(NLT)
