Living as Light

October 26, 2026 Lisa Hennessy

“For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!”—Ephesians 5:8 (NLT)

On my drive home, for the past month I have seen many houses with fun decorations for Halloween. However, some are a pretty creepy to me. One particular home that I pass, has some pagan images in their yard and on their front door. I feel a darkness when I drive by it. Because of this I pray for the people living in that house.

I don’t know if the people who live in there are Christians. From the heavy feeling I have as well as the nudge to pray for them as I drive past it, I would venture to say they probably aren’t. There is a whole other world out there with people who identify as pagan, wicca and other demonic practices.

One way for me to live as a people of light is to pray for those that don’t know Jesus. Noone is too far from God…not even those claiming to practice witchcraft. I enjoy hearing the stories from those who once lived in this darkness to finally find Jesus.

Ephesians 5:8 reminds me that before I accepted Christ, I was once living in darkness. I didn’t realize it until I found Him. Once we accept Jesus into our hearts and lives, we become children of the light. His brightness enters our world.

We are given the desire to shine light into our world especially where we sense darkness. While Halloween can be a time for some children to trick-or-treat, it is also filled with some scary images. As Christians, we don’t have to embrace darkness to enjoy a holiday.

This Halloween, we don’t need to manufacture brightness because we already have the light of Jesus in us. In the past, I have prayed over the candy before the children come knocking on our doors. If you are taking your children or grandchildren trick or treating, you can also pray for each house as you approach it.

While we won’t be home to pass out candy this year, printing labels with scriptures or a simple Jesus Loves You to put on the candy is something that can be done too. I would also include a church website on the sticker. A parent or lost teen might read that scripture on that piece of candy which could lead to them to walk through the doors of a church. We plant the seeds and let God water them.

Father God,
Open my eyes to those living in darkness to share the light of Jesus. Clothe me in Your Light as I get ready for each day. Thank You for sending Your Son to save me from the darkness of my sin by giving me light and life. Let our presence and our homes expose darkness rather than entertain it. Draw hearts to the true Light of the world. I pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

October Verse
“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”—Colossians 2:8 (NLT)
