Deliberate prayers

March 30, 2026 Lisa Hennessy

“The LORD is near to everyone who prays to him, to every faithful person who prays to him.”—Psalm 145:18 (GW)

Am I partnering with God with my prayers? God knows what I need before I ask, but I still need to go to Him and ask. He doesn’t ask for long eloquent prayers. Look at some of the people in the Bible Jesus healed because they believed; the thief on the cross cried out to Jesus, Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Luke 23:42.

In Matthew 8:2, the man with leprosy knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” These people did not have long winded words for Jesus. They had faith that Jesus would heal them. Just like the thief on the cross some of our healing may not happen here on earth.

Because we have prayer accessible to us 24 hours a day, we are never alone without hope. We may be at a loss of what or how to pray, but a simple, Lord, I need help, is heard by God. I can not even tell you how many times I would pray that when I was on my way to stop my mother’s assisted living.

When I am saying these prayers, it is my internal voice having a conversation with my Heavenly Father. It brings me peace. Sometimes when I am driving, I may even talk out loud to God. Fortunately, with bluetooth, people don’t know if I am on my phone or not. I kind of am…it’s my phone line to God.

God wants us to go to Him in prayer for our everyday tasks not just for the big stuff. Because you know what? For me, a lot of little stuff can add up to a whole lot of stress and unrest for me when I don’t go to God with it.

Prayer is not about me persuading God to do what I want, but a way for the Spirit to move in me to do God’s will. Knowing God is with me guiding my day, gives me a sense of calm I can’t describe. My prayer below is an example of a deliberate prayer I prayed this morning:

Father God,
Direct every step of my day. I asked that You be with me as I stop by mom’s today. Help me to be make the most of my time with her as well as take care of the needed tasks while I am in town. Protect me every inch of my drive home. Be with me as I run my errands. If it is Your will to give someone a knit gift, clearly reveal it to me. Be with me in all the knowns and unknowns of the day. Help me to stay focused on You in all I do. I pray all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

May everyone have a blessed Easter as we celebrate or resurrected Lord and Savior this weekend!
