Pocket Prayer Cloth

March 23, 2026 Lisa Hennessy

“It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.”—1 Corinthians 3:7 (NLT)

God laid it on my heart a few weeks ago to knit pocket prayer cloths to attach to our church’s Easter invite cards. I found a pattern online, but it wasn’t exactly what I was wanting. I decided to create my own pattern along with a tag to go along with it.

I also couldn’t find a tag that I really liked, so I chose parts of different ones and came up with my own. It reads, This is a pocket prayer cloth made especially for you. Place it in your pocket, purse or under your pillow. Each time you touch it, may you be reminded of God's unending love for you. May it bring you peace, comfort, hope and joy. Always remember God loves you and you matter.

I am going to try and give these out to as many people as I can. I always bring my knitting with me when I get a pedicure. In addition to tipping the young woman, I gave her one of the prayer cloths. I told her, I don’t know if you have a church that you attend, but if not, I’d like to invite you to my church. We have several services for Easter and a really good children’s program. She told me she had a 7-year-old son and that the church was right down the road from where she lived.

I don’t know if they will attend, but I planted the seed. As 1 Corinthians 3:7 tells us, it doesn’t matter who does the planting or watering of the seeds. What matters is we do it. While it may not seem like you are doing kingdom work, inviting someone to church, may be watering the seed someone else has planted. God is the one who makes the seed grow.

I am praying for more opportunities between now and April 5th to share these little evangelism tools. In the summer our church hosts a women’s event called, Summer Splash. I look forward to doing this again for that.

I really love these mini cross prayer cloths. They are quick and easy to make as well. However, you don’t have to knit to pass out church invitations. I saw on social media these Jesus pens that you can get on Amazon. They have a little Jesus on the top and say, Everyone needs a little Jesus. You could attach a church invitation to something like this too.

Because I don’t consider myself an evangelist, I am thankful that God has been able to use my knitting and giving away gifts as a way for me to share my faith in a nonthreatening way.

I know the idea of evangelizing is intimidating to many. It was and sometimes still is for me. It isn’t God’s desire for us to put pressure on ourselves or feel overwhelmed with this mission. Some of these prayer cloths and invites, I may leave on a table or in restroom for someone to find. Whenever the Holy Spirit prompts me, I will do it.

If you do knit, here is the free PDF for the pattern and tags. I know I could charge a small fee for this pattern, but for me, I don’t feel right making money off of doing Kingdom work.

Please share it with others. I would love to see knitting groups all over make some version of prayer cloths to share in their corner of the world. During a holiday such as Easter this is the perfect time to do this.

Father God,
Strengthen me with Your grace to grow in what You have called me to do….share Jesus with those that don’t know Him. I ask for courage in inviting others to Easter church services. Guide me to people who are searching for more in life. May hearts be softened and ears be open to hearing about our Resurrected Savior. I pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

March Verse
“Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising Jesus Christ from death. This fills us with a living hope, and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings that God keeps for his people. He keeps them for you in heaven, where they cannot decay or spoil or fade away.”—1 Peter 1:3-4 (GNT)
